Sony announces the 12-24mm F2.8 GM lens- world’s widest full frame zoom with constant F2.8 Aperture

Expanding its line-up of e-mount lenses, Sony announces the launch of the all-new 12-24mm F2.8G Master lens. Designed for photographers and movie makers, the ultra-wide 12mm angle of view makes it possible to emphasize distance and create dynamic perspectives that are beyond the scope of the human eye. It is the world’s widest full frame zoom with a constant F2.8 Aperture. It has been constructed in such a manner that it gives complete creative freedom to the users. The lens is ideal for shooting at night, capturing starry skies, and other low-light subjects at low sensitivities without having to use extremely slow shutter speeds.

Some of the key features of the all-new 12-24mm F2.8G Master lens are listed below.

1. The minimal aberration enhances sharpness

Two Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED glass elements suppress chromatic aberration that can degrade resolution in this type of large-aperture lens, ensuring that colour smearing does not occur anywhere in the image area so that maximum sharpness is maintained throughout.

2. The lens is small and lightweight:

It has an innovative optical design with four aspherical elements, including three XA types, plus a mechanical design that features high-performance XD Linear Motors, in a compact 12–24-mm constant F2.8 zoom that weighs only 847 grams.

3. It offers beautiful G Master bokeh:

It has been constructed in such a manner that the XA elements effectively suppresses onion-ring bokeh, fine tuning of its spherical aberration characteristics during both design and manufacture, plus a nine-blade circular aperture, contribute to exquisitely smooth, creamy G Master bokeh.

4. It comes equipped with a Nano AR coating II:

A new Nano AR Coating II that can be evenly applied to large lens elements or highly curved element surfaces has been developed to suppress internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting for clear, crisp imagery.

5. Constant F2.8 maximum aperture for flexible moviemaking:

With a constant F2.8 maximum aperture at all focal lengths, aperture does not change while zooming so that exposure, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity can remain consistent while shooting movies. The creative opportunities afforded by shooting movies at a 12mm angle of view with F2.8 constant aperture in full-frame are boundless, and when used on an APS-C or Super 35 camera, the wide end of the zoom range becomes equivalent to 18mm, providing a useful zoom range for moviemaking.

6. Dust and moisture-resistant design:

The 12-24mm F2.8G Master lens is designed to be dust and moisture-resistant and provides the reliability needed for outdoor use in challenging conditions. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, making it easier to wipe off any fingerprints from the lens surface

7. Fast, precise autofocus and tracking:

A total of four XD Linear Motors, two for each of the lens's focus groups, contribute to fast, precise autofocus and tracking that augment the many advantages provided by Sony's native lenses. This advanced system makes full use of the speed potential provided by high-performance camera bodies, making it easier to capture significant moments in the most dynamic sports or other types of action. AF operation is also quiet with minimal vibration.

8. Easy manual focus/autofocus switching:

A focus mode switch that allows instant switching between auto and manual focus mode can be a great advantage when shooting subjects or situations that require fine manual focus adjustment.

Other features include

The lens is further packed with a customizable focus hold button, focus-mode switch, zooming ring and focusing ring that are positioned for easy operation while shooting. The Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly to the most subtle adjustments when focusing manually so control feels immediate and precise. The rear filter holder accommodates standard sheet-type ND, colour correction and other filters for expanded expressive capability.
