Kanheri Caves (109 Caves), also known as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri are located north of Borivali in Mumbai within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This picture is of cave no. 11 which is very similar to cave number five in Ellora, Aurangabad. These are India's only caves where Buddhist monks have hosted group recitations of religious scriptures to do their diurnal practice. They sat around elongated rectangular tables cut out of the cave's rock. The tables have survived to this day. The open doors and windows give copious lighting to the cave. Must visit ancient piece of history in the city of Mumbai.
