The 50.1MP full-frame Exmor RS™ sensor is processed in real time by the BIONZ XR™ engine. An advanced AI unit enables high-level subject recognition, blackout-free viewing, and full AF/AE tracking at up to 30fps.
Flexible focus area settings
XL and XS focus spot sizes are now available in addition to L, M, and S. XS helps avoid foreground distractions, and users can also create a custom focus area with chosen size and aspect ratio.
More control over timing to capture decisive moments
Pre-capture records moments before the shutter is released, even at 30fps, with selectable time options. Continuous Shooting Speed Boost temporarily increases burst speed to help capture key instants.
High-speed continuous shooting at full 50.1 MP resolution
Shoot continuously at 50.1MP and up to 30fps with full AF/AE tracking and 120 AF/AE calculations per second. Blackout-free shooting ensures seamless subject capture and clear viewfinder visibility.
A wide variety of subjects accurately recognised
New [Auto] mode allows broader subject recognition in stills and video. Animal recognition improves by 30%, bird recognition by 50%, and eyes, heads, and faces of pets are now more accurately detected.
High-resolution 8K/4K recording for impressive realism
4K movies can be cropped from 8K footage with 8.6K oversampling. 8K 4:2:2 10-bit XAVC HS and 4K in XAVC HS, S, or S-I formats are supported. XAVC S-I records up to 600 Mbps for high image quality.
High-frame-rate recording at up to 120p
4K can be recorded at 120p for up to 5x slow motion. Full HD at 240fps enables up to 10x slow motion. S&Q mode offers convenient in-camera slow/fast playback, with intuitive frame rate selection.
Better S-Log matching with Cinema Line cameras
S-Log3 gamma curve improves shadow to mid-tone gradation. With ISO 800 minimum and a 200–640 range, detail is enhanced over α1, allowing better S-Log3 matching with Sony’s cinema cameras.
Stable, high-level video shooting
Active Mode combines precision stabilisation and gyro sensor, while Dynamic active Mode adds electronic stabilisation. Auto Framing adjusts composition, and Framing Stabiliser locks subject position.
Real-time Recognition AF for movies
AI-based AF tracks eyes, body, and head position in real time. Subject recognition is expanded from α1 to include birds in movies, with tracking based on colour, pattern, and spatial data.
Breathing compensation
Breathing compensation reduces focus breathing during video. Clear Image Zoom maintains angle of view, and breathing metadata supports correction in Catalyst software during post-production.
Extraordinary detail with approximately 50.1 effective megapixels
The 50.1MP Exmor RS sensor and BIONZ XR engine delivers lifelike, high-resolution images with G Master lenses. APS-C mode or crops still retain up to 21MP for impressive detail.
Selectable RAW image size and quality
Compressed RAW shooting is possible at up to 30fps. Lossless Compressed RAW, JPEG, and HEIF are also available in M and S sizes, consistent across full-frame and APS-C modes.
Composite RAW modes for lower noise and higher resolution
NR Shooting captures 4–32 RAW images for low-noise results, while Pixel Shift Multi Shooting composites 4 or 16 images for ultra-high resolution using Imaging Edge Desktop software.
High sensitivity, low noise, and wide dynamic range
Noise reduction preserves detail at mid-to-high sensitivity, ideal for indoor sports. Up to 15 stops of dynamic range at lower ISOs ensures smooth, natural gradations in every shot.
Optical five-axis image stabilisation achieves 8.5-step performance
A precision stabilisation unit and advanced gyro sensors deliver up to 8.5-step correction at centre and 7.0-step at edges. Sync with supported lenses enhances blur control even at telephoto.
Flexible LCD monitor positioning
The 4-axis multi-angle 3.2-type LCD tilts up ~98°, down ~40°, and rotates 180° sideways. It is touch sensitive, has a wide colour gamut, and remains clear even in outdoor conditions.
Advanced grip holds and ease of use
Improved grip ergonomics enhance comfort during long shoots. A C5 custom button is added, and the optional VG-C5 Vertical Grip mirrors the grip design and extends battery life.
Fast registration of frequently used functions
My Menu allows quick addition of items via long-press or Delete button. The Fn menu now includes options like recording folder selection and new folder creation for easier access.

Seamless search and playback with two memory cards
When both card slots are used, content from two memory cards can be displayed together, allowing smooth playback without switching. Playback filtering improves on-site workflow efficiency.
Remote Camera Tool
Remote Camera Tool enables PC tethered shooting via wired LAN, with camera settings control. Multiple cameras can connect; synchronising autofocus and shutter with the main camera.
